Ancient Martial Arts

At Samurai Edinburgh we teach Ninpo Bugei - the ancient and authentic martial arts system of the Samurai and the Ninja, the legendary shadow warriors of Japan. These arts are commonly known as Ninjutsu, Jujutsu, and ancient Karate, and they have been preserved for centuries through traditional teaching methods which we still practice today. Our training is focussed on the internal development of the individual as well as the technical skills of martial training. Ninpo is concerned with the defence of the whole self, and recognises that defence against a life-threat is dealt with by the spirit as much as with physical technique.

Tenkai Dojo

Our dojo is a small, traditional martial arts school offering evening classes for adults in central Edinburgh. We welcome people from all walks of life and every level of ability and experience. Whether you’re completely new to martial arts or have tried others before, at Tenkai Dojo you’ll be inspired to reach your goals of self defence, confidence and fitness. Together we build a personal commitment to high values, moral codes, and an exciting journey of learning and self discovery.

Taster Classes

We offer taster classes to let you try the martial art and see if it's right for you. A taster is a one-hour session where you train with our regular students, with no further obligation. As a beginner you can expect to learn the very basics of our Taijutsu. This will include stances, strikes, blocks and effective self defence patterns.

Our Instructor

Sensei Tim Beattie is originally from the UK, but he grew up in America and Luxembourg before moving to Brighton, where he became a student of Sensei Stuart Allison at Shin Jin Dojo. Tim has studied martial arts for more than two decades. Tim first visited Edinburgh in 2010 for a friend's wedding and immediately knew it was the place for him. A software engineer by day, Tim teaches traditional Japanese martial arts at Tenkai Dojo in Edinburgh.

Shin Jin Dojo

Our parent school, Shin Jin Dojo in Brighton, was set up in 1999 by Sensei Stuart Allison. Sensei Stuart has practised martial arts for four decades, with many journeys to Japan to learn the arts from their source. His vision for the dojo has resulted in Samurai: a place where people from all walks of life, ages, gender, sexuality, and ability can train in traditional Japanese martial arts.
